The Barotse Floodplain also known as the Bulozi Plain, Lyondo or the Zambezi Floodplain is one of Africa’s greatwetlands, on the Zambezi River in the Western Province of Zambia. It is a designated Ramsar site, regarded as being of high conservation value. The name recognises the floodplain as spawning the culture and way of life of the Lozi people, “Rotse” being a variant of Lozi, and “Ba” meaning “people”. They became a powerful kingdom in Central/Southern Africa under their King or LitungaLewanika, whose realm extended up to 300 km from the plain and was called Barotseland.

Teak Forest

Liuwa Plain, nestled amidst the upper Zambezi floodplains in western Zambia, is bordered by the Luambimba and Luanginga Rivers. This captivating region boasts seasonally flooded grassy plains adorned with scattered woodland islands. While officially designated as a national park in 1972, Liuwa carries a rich conservation heritage that dates back to ancient times. Initially proclaimed as a royal hunting ground by the King of Barotseland in the early 1880s, it enjoyed protection by the Lozi people. Liuwa is renowned for hosting the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa, offering awe-inspiring scenes of vast herds. Additionally, the plains teem with zebras, tsessebes, and lechwes, drawing the attention of predators like wild dogs, hyenas, cheetahs, and lions. Moreover, Liuwa supports an array of globally significant bird species, with over 330 recorded in this remarkable sanctuary.
